Releasing in Australia under Sega OziSoft, the Master System and Game Gear versions of Ecco share a reworked story and game mechanics that work on the 8-bit systems, with the Master System version boasting a higher resolution to the Game Gear port. With alternate coloured glyphs, a heavy emphasis on block puzzles to pass through them, new enemies, and new enemy placement in certain levels that didn't have them in the Mega Drive version it is a very unique and different experience to the original game across its 16 levels. It also has its own soundtrack which is quite lovely!
My copy has some clear history with a number of level passwords being scrawled on the manual back, where it looks like Deep Water (level 8) ended up being the stoping point for the original owner of the game. I love little things like that; pristine copies are nice (and I have a pristine manual in my alternate silver relase from OziSoft for archival purposes anyway) but history on a series like this is what makes it for me.
